The Prix Ars Electronica is a leading digital-art award.Founded in 1987 as part of the Ars Electronica Festival (held in Linz, Austria, since 1979), it has become a reference worldwide not only for its constancy, but also for its ability to continually reformulate its approach and keep up with the rapidly -changing digital culture.
This year’s jury members for the Interactive Art category include Giselle Beiguelman, Sergio Motta Institute’s artistic director, who will be in Linz in April to help decide who will take the coveted Golden Nica , Distinctions and Honorable Mentions. This is the first time Brazil has a presence in this field, and this reflects the maturity and high level of work being done here.
The invitation to join the jury came after Gerfried Stocker ( Ars Electronica’s artistic director) attended the A&T International Forum held by our Institute in November 2009, as part of the proceedings around the 8th Sergio Motta Art and Technology Awards. Key factors behind his decision included the diversity of artistic work shown there, with many audacious solutions in the use of open source code and installations of high technical complexity and aesthetic rigor, as well as specific aspects of the 8th Awards selection proceedings.
Entries for the Prix Ars Electronica may be submitted by anyone interested. Jury members too may nominate artists, and Giselle Beiguelman hopes to get many proposals from Brazilians to present to the jury. Along with Giselle on this year’s Prix Ars Electronica jury is another Brazilian: Andre Lemos, in the Digital Communities category.
